Writer/Director Derek Cianfrance’s paints a different color of love with his hard-hitting story about a young couple falling in and out of it. Blue Valentine moves back and forth between Cindy (Michelle Williams) and Dean’s (Ryan Gosling) six-year relationship. The film reveals the couple’s initial meeting and dating period, but things get complicated when Cindy learns she’s pregnant. Cut to years later with Cindy being an ultrasound technician, Dean being a house painter, their daughter Frankie now in grade school and the couple is at a breaking point in their marriage. Williams and Gosling give outstanding performances that should be remembered like other pairs of on-screen lovers (Bonnie & Clyde, Frankie & Johnny, Sid & Nancy, etc.) because the sadness shared with the audience is honest and real. It’s a shame if history does not, but at least Cianfrance’s writing and direction will stand the test of time because his talent and passion for filmmaking is unquestionable.
